How to Help Someone If Choking
Choking victims require immediate intervention in order to minimize the loss of oxygen to the bloodstream. It only takes between four and six minutes of oxygen deprivation for the brain, organs and biological systems within the body to become damaged. However, it’s also important that victims are properly assessed and proper assistance is rendered to prevent unnecessary injury or the aggravation of problems. On our next report, Alexa learns what to do when someone is choking. First have someone call 911. Next, bend over the person who is choking and give them five forceful back blows between their shoulder blades. If that doesn’t work, stand the person upright and give them five abdominal thrusts with your cupped hands, just above their bellybutton. Continue to alternate between the motions until the ambulance arrives.
